The New Husband

Rom. 7:2-3 For the married woman is bound by the law to her husband while he is living; but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law regarding the husband. So then if, while the husband is living, she is joined to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress, though she is joined to another man.
I. Christ is the New Husband —Rom. 7:2-6 (Monday)
A. Those who have been regenerated, whether male or female believers, receive Christ as their Husband and are a part of His wife.
B. All genuine Christians have Christ as their Husband, but tragically many are not aware that Christ is their Husband —Rom. 7:2-6.

II. Our old man (the old husband) has been crucified —Rom. 7:2 (Tuesday)
A. Romans 7:2-4a shows us two husbands: the old husband, which is our old man, and the New Husband, which is the ever-living Christ —Rom. 7:2.
B. Since our old man, the old husband, has been crucified with Christ, we are freed from the law of the old husband —Rom. 6:6.

III. Our old man has been crucified through the Body of Christ toward the law, that we might be married to another Husband, to Him who was raised from the dead —Rom. 7:4 (Wednesday)
A. This being “married to” signifies an organic union with Christ in His resurrection in person, name, life, and existence in our new identity as the wife —Rom. 7:4; 2 Cor. 11:2.
B. Since Christ is our Husband, we must rely on Him and take Him as the Head —Eph. 5:23.
C. Christ is not only our Head; He is also our person and life —Col. 3:4.

IV. As the wife, we produce fruit to God: (Thursday)
A. By living in resurrection and living to God, we produce fruit to God —Rom. 7:4.
B. The phrase “produce fruit to God” means that God is produced as the fruit —Rom. 7:4.

V. Since we have died to the law in which we were bound, we are now freed from the law; as the wife and the new one, we are no longer under the law: (Friday)
A. The law describes and explains God —Lev. 19:2.
B. Therefore, the law has many demands and regulations toward fallen man to identify sin as sin and to make man know sin.

VI. As the wife, we should also serve the Lord in the newness of the spirit and not in the oldness of the letter: (Saturday)
A. In chapter six, verse 4, we have the newness of life for our living; in chapter seven, verse 6, we have the newness of the spirit for our serving —Rom. 6:4; 7:6.
B. Both the newness of life and the newness of the spirit are related to The Spirit —1 Cor. 15:45; 2 Tim. 4:22.
C. We need to realize that as the new one, we have been freed from the law of the old man and married to our New Husband, the resurrected Christ, so that we may produce fruit to God and serve the Lord in the newness of the spirit —Rom. 7:6.

Word of Appetizer
Which two husbands are there in chapter 7 verses 2 through 4a of Romans?
The first husband, the old husband, is the old man mentioned in 6:6, who has been crucified with Christ. The second husband, the new husband, mentioned in 7:2-4, is Christ.
As believers, we have two statuses: The first is our old status as the fallen old man, who left the original position of a wife dependent on God and took the self-assuming position of a husband and head, independent of God. The second is our new status as the regenerated new man, restored to our original and proper position as the genuine wife to God, depending on Him and taking Him as our Head.
Spiritual Burden
Our old man has been crucified to the law through the body of Christ so that we might marry another husband, Christ, who has been raised from the dead. Since Christ is our Husband, we must depend on Him and take Him as our Head. Christ is not only our Head—He is also our person and our life.
We need to realize that we, as the new man, are freed from the old man’s law and have been married to our new Husband, the resurrected Christ, that we might bear fruit to God and serve the Lord in newness of spirit.

The Revelation of the Truth
Christ is the new Husband; our old man, the old husband, has been crucified.

The Experience of Life
Our old man has been crucified to the law through the body of Christ so that we might marry another husband, Christ, who has been raised from the dead. This joining indicates that in our new status as a wife, we have an organic union in person, name, life, and existence with Christ in His resurrection; now we are married to Christ, our new Husband.

Practice and Application
As the wife, we should also serve the Lord in newness of spirit, not in oldness of letter.
